MY SPARK OF GENIUS?
2 Shift from Ego to Essence.
We have been educated to think critically and judgmentally, we imagine strong reasons for inaction and then allow it to become our reality, even before we make an attempt.
On my sixty-ninth birthday, I made a choice that started me on a practice that continues to transform my life.
This was when I first began what I now call the Emergence Process, "the shift from ego to essence."
I had tasked myself with a huge project, and my dining room table had been taken over by tidy stacks of books on the story of evolution, written by authors whose work had inspired me for many years.
In spite of this rich and supportive environment, I found myself compulsive about my work, trapped in an exhausting struggle to get the job done.
I knew I had to stop the current momentum of my life
in order to make way for something new.
I began each morning before dawn,
devoting three hours to silence and solitude.
This was long enough to create space for something new to happen.
I let there be soft music, candlelight, flowers, and above all, peace and quiet.
This "time outside of time" was a place as profound as the quietest monastery or cave, a place I created around myself.
I now call this place Inner Sanctuary.
But even at the thought of doing this, my compulsive, egoic "local self"
was prickling. I was bombarded by its complaint:
"We don't have time; we'll never get the curriculum done."
My driven local self always felt left behind, no matter what time I woke up and began my work.
But I persisted. Every morning, I simply sat in silence, open and empty, listening to the crackling fire
and the rain drumming softly on my roof.
Within the Inner Sanctuary, I created a special place for my writing and a quiet time to gain more intimate access to the wise and beloved inner voice that has guided me all my life.
While I had no idea of this then,
I know now that all of us have this inner voice.
It is the Higher Self, the Essential Self, within each of us -
which is each of us -
and it is communicating with us all the time.
Through the Emergence Process, we access the Self and begin the lifelong process of incarnating that essence.
This is a life practice I do every morning, and recommend you try it too.
