MY SPARK OF GENIUS?
17.4 Living Up to My Size
What holds us back
is not who we really are,
but who we think we are.
In other words, we’re usually more
than who we believe and allow ourselves to be.
However, it is often the deep-seated fear
of being judged and rejected that makes
the need blend in or fit in outweigh the desire
to express our authentic selves.
We dress more conservatively
to avoid getting attention;
we downplay our gifts, strengths,
and accomplishments because
we don’t want to make someone
feel bad or envious.
And even in our close relationships, we don’t allow ourselves to share our thoughts, feelings, because we fear we may appear weak, needy and thus less attractive.
As a result, we either dare to express only a smaller, toned-down version of ourselves, or we simply withdraw into obscurity, isolation, and loneliness.
Instead of hiding out in a smaller and smaller comfort zone, practice expressing yourself at least once every day.
For example, give yourself a voice by sharing an opinion about something you are interested in or asking for something you need or would like help with.
Challenge yourself to be noticed
and wear a bright-colored shawl
or strike up a conversation with a stranger at the coffee shop.
Or try any form of creative expression.
Sing in the car or shower. Draw.
Write a poem, a letter, or a story.
Cook a new dish.
Get out your camera and take a picture.
At first it takes courage to express yourself more openly.
But as it becomes more and more normal for you, your sense of self-acceptance increases.
And once you accept yourself, you’re free to shine your true genius into the world.
