MY SPARK OF GENIUS?
14 Getting Out of My Own Way.
To be creative -
to allow the expression
of your natural genius to flow,
in any and all forms
in which it may gloriously burst forth -
you must be willing to set aside (or flow around)
all the doubts and anxieties, voices of judgment
(internal and external), and other resistance
that stands between you and that flow of creation.
It doesn't mean you eliminate these resistances (though these voices almost always quiet down, once your first pen or brush stroke or first step is underway) - no, we bring these emotions with us into our expression ... in fact, often (if not inevitably), this blend of emotion and experience is the very stuff from which we craft our creations, from which our most authentic expressions spring.
Getting out of your own way does mean,
as writer Steven Pressfield says,
that you step up and simply "do the work."
Of course, simple is not always easy.
Even master composer Igor Stravinsky said his day-to-day craft of writing music sometimes seemed more like "making shoes" than making a masterpiece.
And yet, out of that day-to-day crafting ... emerged the masterpiece.
So, gently, lovingly, step out of your own way ... each day,
simply be willing to start.
